Another week has passed, and we are just a few short weeks from Summer. Right now, we are starting to wrap things up in a rather messy covid-19 bow, and say adieu to a rather unusual (to say the least) school year. To that point, children have (mostly) finished their Story Boards, Readers Theaters Scripts, and are now on the part of our project where they can really let their creative juices flow. Now is the time they get to bring their folktale to life, through puppetry or live action.
Project Based Learning is certainly different without one of the main components - in person group work. But children (and parents) have risen to the challenge and I hope our final project will be something that all of us are proud of and will look back on as a special memento of this time together-and-yet-apart.
Our routines went smoothly as usual - Livia stepped up to do a lovely job as special reader on Monday. She opted to read a couple of lovely poems. Many in this group seem to have fallen head over heels with poetry - I hope it lasts a lifetime!
Our chapter book read aloud is getting more exciting as Danny’s father runs into a bit of a pickle in the woods - but Danny came to the rescue. Now, onto more adventures getting back at that rotten Mr. Hazell.
There were plenty of other offerings too, of course, in the recorded morning greetings - like making pretzels on “Taste Tuesday,” for instance, with a Walter the Baker story time, with a recipe attached.
Friday is often field trip day when we’re at school, so I thought it would be a great idea to go on a virtual field trip. Especially since our Wild Swan Theater trips had to be cancelled for the rest of the year, I wanted to take advantage of other quality children’s theater productions that we could experience together. So, on Friday we saw Yao Yao at the Brush Theater. It wasn't quite the same as seeing a play together, but whatever way we can build community, I say let's do it!
