Vermicomposting - Environmental Superhero Project

Each month, my 1st and 2nd graders become Environmental Superheroes! September's project (planting a tree) has had some delays ... but October's project has begun in a big way.

A new batch of wonderful Red Wigglers just arrived, and a new compost bin prepared. Our K-Buddies helped us rip up newspapers and get everything nice and damp. In went the worms (1000, according to the package, but we will have to take their word on it), and some old cut up apples and some mushy tomatoes.

We will feed our worms our lunch and snack scraps, and will keep the newspapers nice and moist. Beautiful worm castings should be ours by April, when it is time for planting (Food to Table, Part 2). We are composting food waste AND making something good for the plants. Hooray, Superheroes!

Tearing the newspaper

Adding cardboard to the bottom of the bin

Adding dampened newspaper to the cardboard

In go the worms!
