What IS readers theater, and why do we do it? Simply put, it is a script that is adapted from a story or any piece of literature that is divided into roles. The performers' goals are to read the scrips so effectively and cohesively that the audience can picture the action just from hearing the words. There is no "acting," costumes, props, or memorized lines. The readers need to read with great expression, and to project their voices.
The benefits are numerous: teamwork happens naturally as children have to really listen to each other and wait for cues. Numerous readings build comprehension, confidence, fluency, and poise.
For those of you who were there to witness, I think you saw the results. These children were definitely poised, confident, and joyful readers!
