Math was a bit raucous this week as we started
playing a new, exciting game after workbooks are put away. This variation on
the PIG probability game, called SKUNK, is played with 2 dice. We TRY to be
quiet, we really do, but when those double ones come up - OUCH! Oh well, it’s
all worth it when children say that math is their favorite subject - games
really help it come alive, and they often don’t even realize they’re learning.
EB’s finished up this week, and that’s a wrap
for this year. Now teachers will have the summer to think of some good ideas
for next year’s offerings. (It's not too late to donate to the Humane Society!) The pen pal letter project is wrapping up too, as
students drafted and revised their final letter to their secret city
correspondent. The postmasters (Grace and I) will be delivering invitations to
a popsicle picnic next week, where children will find out who they have been
writing to.
Our mealworms are still mealworms. We check
them each day, and are doing careful documentation of any changes. We have
noticed that some are shedding skins, and as they do so, the mealworms tend to
become lighter. Fingers crossed for darking beetles soon! Shan held double
science this week too - 1st and 2nd graders from both classes combined on both
Wednesday and Thursday to learn about endangered animals in Michigan, and made posters about the animal of their choice.
Nels and Dillon did a fantastic job as Special
Readers on Wednesday. Dillon’s mom and grandma were in the audience, which made
it very special. This was Dillon’s final time as a special reader - my, how he
has grown over the past two years - it makes a teacher proud, for sure. Also, a
librarian from the Ann Arbor District Library came to visit on Thursday to tell
us all about the fun things happening this summer, so reading fun doesn’t have
to stop with the school year.
