November's Super Hero Challenge - 117 Pounds of Junk Mail!

On Friday, December 1st, we collected the junk mail (mostly catalogs) sent to 10 families during the month of November. Each child got a chance to weigh a bagful using a bathroom scale, and then we tallied all of the results. In total, our classroom families received 117 pounds of "junk" sent to them this past month. Ugh!

Hopefully, everyone takes advantage of our excellent curbside recycling program, and doesn't throw paper in the trash bins - but, did you know you can also "opt out" of getting catalogs in the first place? You can use a service like catalog choice https://www.catalogchoice.org/ to save natural resources.

Before our Super Heroes toted all 117 pounds of mail to the recycle bins, we saved our favorite heavy, glossy pages from some of the catalogs. I showed the students how to make one of my favorite crafts. In this way, we can reUSE, before we reCYCLE. Here is a youtube tutorial so you can learn too! Now the next time a pesky catalog comes into the house, tear off that cover before popping it into the bin, and make a truly beautiful gift for someone.
