Mapping the World

This two-day project was lots of fun, and brought the children closer to understanding what a continent is. At this age, many students still have some confusion about the difference between a city, state, country, and continent. Keeping with our tenet of making learning hands-on, teams of children needed to follow a recipe exactly in order to create a batch of playdough. Then each child got to color their glob any hue they wanted. That was yesterday.

This morning, after reading a book about maps, and looking at various atlases, partners got to take seven different colors of playdough and try to create 3-D world maps with all seven continents. Some went one step further and wrote in the oceans, and all groups properly labeled the continents.

I think they turned out to be works of art, don't you?
