EB's - The Final Round of the School Year

Today was the first meeting of this 5-session Extension Block. There were lots of great choices for children - Oodles of Doodles with Elaine, Picture This 2 with Val, Outdoor Adventures with Shan, and It's DAHLicious, with me. The children all seemed pleased with their choices, and we look forward to a lot more fun in the next few weeks.

In my EB, we will be reading parts of many different Roald Dahl books, and then doing a cooking/eating project inspired by what we've read. Today's selection was from The Twits. Mr. and Mrs. Twit are probably two of the most deplorable characters Dahl wrote about, although they have a lot of competition - so many of his characters are deliciously deplorable. These two torment each other by devising terrible tricks to play. For example, Mr. Twit put a frog in Mrs. Twit's bed, and Mrs. Twit put her glass eye in Mr. Twit's beer. But perhaps the MOST disgusting trick was Mrs. Twit putting worms in Mr. Twit's spaghetti. He wondered why it had a peculiar "bitter taste and mushy texture", but was convinced that it was just a new brand. I'd feel sorry for him if we wasn't so dastardly himself.

So, on today's menu: wormy spaghetti! The children helped make the sauce by grating a lot of carrots. These were simply added to the sauce at the very end - a nice little trick of my own to get young ones to eat more vegetables. Then it was spooned over my special wormy spaghetti and eaten with lots of cheese.

Because we have a few extra minutes after eating, we made Mr. Twit beards. We read where his beard is absolutely filthy with rotten food bits, so we decorated our beards to be as grimy as we could.

EB's are such a great way for children to work with other children, and for me to get to know children outside my own classroom. It is a really lovely thing.
