We're in the Money

In my math class, we continue to read about, write about, and learn about money. There are so many wonderful picture books about money - from Pigs Will Be Pigs, to Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday. We've been practicing writing with proper notation (using dollar signs and decimal points), adding and subtracting money, counting piles of change, shopping and making change, etc. This is all in preparation for our big Flea Market Math day coming up after the winter break.

Today, each student got the opportunity to design their own dollar bill. We read One Cent, Two Cents, Old Cent, New Cent, to learn more about the history of money. We studied pictures of real dollar bills in different dominations, noticing the pictures and symbols, serial numbers, signatures, and text. Then, using a template, students got to work. Here is what Evie's dollar looked like:



I only wish my bills were as cute as this!
