Birthday Traditions - Identity

Eliza's mom came in this afternoon to talk about cultural and family traditions surrounding birthdays. Eliza's birthday is coming up, so this was not only a way to honor Eliza, but to also explore commonalities (it seems we all have cake, a special meal, gifts, candles) and differences (how many candles - real age or one extra "to grow on"? dinner at a restaurant or at home?)

Part of Eliza's birthday tradition to hear the story of the day she was born. I don't think any child would tire of hearing that particular tale. Such a wonderful gift.

Some traditions are old in Eliza's family, passed down from Eliza's parents and grandparents. But some are being created now! An example is this lovely circle puzzle that was sent to Eliza by a close family friend. Each year, Eliza puts the puzzle together, and then receives one or two wooden toys to place in the holes. A very sweet tradition that - I'm willing to guess - will continue to be part of Eliza's identity as she grows up and has children of her own.

And, of course, we had to have candles, the birthday song, and cake!
