Very Special Event on Friday, 11/30/12

One of the ancient stories I've shared this month is from a collection called Cloud Weavers: Ancient Chinese Legends. This particular story is called The Heavenly Flute Player. Following an old custom, on a baby's first birthday, Chinese parents offer their child a tray with various objects. Whatever object the baby grabs reveals what the child will be when he or she grows up. In the story, the child grabbed a piece of green jade, which meant that she would grow to an amazing musician.

As luck would have it, one of our S-K families has a child who will turn one this weekend! Little Arlo (he of the baby shower last year) will soon be celebrating his birthday with big sister Clementine, who has since graduated to the 3rd grade. Arlo and his mom have agreed to come to our classroom at the end of the day on Friday. We will have arranged a variety of things for Arlo to consider - the students have already come up with some great ideas (a ruler for a mathematician, a pencil for a writer, etc.).

I will be sure to take some pictures to mark this momentous decision. I'm so looking forward to celebrating the end of our unit and the beginning of a child's wonderful life.

If you would like to part of the celebration, it will be at 3:00p.m. on Friday.
