Theme for March/Author and Genre Study
As we are all relaxing on mid-winter break, I am starting to plan and gather materials for our next unit. As you know (from top-secret email regarding a certain day at a certain time), we will be reading many of the works of author Cynthia Rylant. However, now that I am reading about her and the different books she has written, I am thinking that extending this to include the genre of memoirs would be a natural fit - and a great way to include a valuable writing workshop lesson.
After reading When I Was Young In the Mountains and When the Relatives Came, we will be discussing what makes a book a memoir as well as the various techniques authors such as Rylant use. Then students will write a piece of their own personal history highlighting a real-life experience. This project will enable the children to take a piece of writing from seed idea through drafting, editing, revising, and finally publishing a book (I will post all final copies on this blog).
