Read Aloud - Frindle
Today we started our first chapter book read-aloud. Each child received their very own copy of Frindle, by Andrew Clements. It is a wonderful book about what happens when a fifth grade boy starts calling a pen a "frindle". Why are words called what they are? Who says that the thing you read is called a "book"? We began by all looking in dictionaries to find the word pen. It was interesting to find that the word could mean an enclosed place for animals, a writing instrument, a slang word for jail, a swan, to cage an animal, or to draw or write. Also, it can be a noun or a verb!
Each child gets to rename three things in the classroom, and we will be making our own very strange dictionaries.
