Our first chapter book read-aloud is a tender story of a 3rd grader called Bat. It is fairly new, and came highly recommended by a children's book seller when I asked for help finding a great "identity" book for my class.
Written by Elana K. Arnold, with some illustrations by Charles Santosa, it has very short chapters which make it perfect for picking up and reading any time we have a moment. I hope the children love Bat as much as I do - he is a nuanced character, and one who needs a bit of help working on interpersonal dynamics. But he is also an animal loving sweetheart who you root for all through the book.
