Happy Earth Day!
Monday, April 22nd, is Earth Day - celebrated since 1970 as a way to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It serves as a yearly reminder of how important it is to protect our fragile planet by promoting sustainability, "green" practices, and so on.
Children decorated Trader Joe's grocery bags with their Earth Day messages and pictures on Thursday, and they should be ready to be handed out to lucky customers on the 22nd. If you are a shopper at TJ's and you get one, be sure to let us know!
Taking part in this nationwide Earth Day grocery bag initiative is something we've done for quite a few years, and is this month's Environmental Super Hero project. Taking care of our planet is a value that is very important to instill at a young age - children need to see all of us picking up litter, recycling consistently, and - maybe most importantly - consuming less. These monthly school projects make children feel that they ARE instruments of positive change - that even though they may be small, the impact that they make is mighty.
Just this year, our Superheroes:
* completed a waste free lunch challenge, and taught other S-Kers about it
* are taking care of a worm bin (both the classroom station, and now their own mini versions)
* made lots of treats and ran a bake sale for birdies - enough to sponsor two raptors at LSNC
* made lots of treats for our own backyard birds at CFP
* made "green" cleaning solution and cleaned the entire atrium
They also raised a lot of money by reading - enough to donate farm animals/bees to Jane Goodall's Read to Feed program. They, along with the other first and second grade (and kindergarten) class, collected well over 100 cans of food for a local food bank, and over 35 pairs of pajamas for local children. While these aren't environmental in nature, our class can be very proud of these good acts as well.
