The weekly routines that did not get displaced by the snow included Special Readers (both Kalyan and Mira took the stage on Monday), spelling, research and project time, and the start of a book review.
Special Readers in Action |
Sometimes it continues into Quiet Reading time! |
Project time with the other 1/2 graders is looked forward to each week. |
Today (Friday) we worked on our credentials for our Medical Clinic walls! |
In math class we continue working with money and making "What's in my Wallet?" riddles for each other. We also learned a funny poem called Smart by Shel Silverstein, and then did coin rubbings to illustrate just how "smart" the child actually was.
The big event this week was our field trip to the Back Door Food Pantry on Friday morning. We boarded the buses to take all 200 items of non-perishable food to Kathy Daly, the sunniest and sweetest woman ever. She warmly greeted the children and talked about food insecurity in our area; how it can happen to anyone, that it is nothing to be ashamed of, and how food pantries are available to all.
We we returned to school, we read Maddi's Fridge, and then did a mindfulness activity called Thank the Farmer. You can watch it by clicking the youtube link:
We are so full of gratitude to be able to help those less fortunate.
Also on Friday morning, Shan led the morning meeting and talked about what has been happening in first and second grade science. A couple of the students spoke about some of the activities and experiments we've done as part of our human body unit, specifically around how the brain controls the body. Given that there was zero preparation time due to Shan being ill and then two snow days, it went really well!
