Caterpillar Funeral

What I love about teaching, number 3,671: Every Day is Different.

Today we had a caterpillar funeral. I don't have pictures of the actual service, as I was involved and it would have been disrespectful to take pictures at the same time.

It was a solemn and extremely sweet ceremony. We sat in a circle and passed around the dead wooly bear caterpillar in order to say goodbye. Each child, if they felt called to, got to say what they appreciated about the caterpillar (and caterpillars/nature in general), or simply thank you/good bye. We then buried them in the dirt and used the beautiful grave stone Gussy brought in.

I did take a few pictures of the grave being prepared. I didn't realize that we were going to have the burial site IN THE CLASSROOM (I imagined the burial happening outside) but that was just one more surprise to the day.

Goodbye sweet wooly bear caterpillar. Thank you for giving this old teacher joy by listening to the many adorable ways children pronounce the word "caterpillar."

Finally, I'll share one of my favorite poems, by my all-time favorite poet:
