What We're Reading Right Now

We're reading a few things together this week - here are a couple of them. First, our brand new chapter book has just been started, but I can already tell it is going to be a favorite. It is the first of one of my dearest series: Clementine, by Sara Pennypacker. The main character seems very much like a modern day Ramona Quimby, which is practically my highest compliment.

Clementine is described as: a kind, gifted, artistic, but impulsive and unpredictable little girl characterized by her multiple personality quirks. Hmmm, several of these adjectives could be applied to our munchkins ... I wonder if that is why they find her so funny? She really is a delight, and the fact that she is a smidge older (a third grader), makes it even better somehow. Best of all, there are many more books in the series, so these students may want to continue reading them throughout the summer. (Don't you just love finding a great series?)

One of the picture books we read was one recommended by one of my mindfulness sites. This one is called The Want Monsters: And How They Stopped Ruling My World  by Chelo Manchego. It is a a very new release (2/2017) by a young author talking to children about quelling those desires to always have more, more, more - whether it is sweets, toys, video games, or attention. It's a very sweet book, and one we will revisit. I also like that we know have shared playful language to use when we are showing those greedier tendencies - and we all have them!
