To Infinity and Beyond!

In my math group this week, we are doing a bit of reading before heading to the math workbooks. This week, we are talking and exploring the concept of infinity. Before reading, I asked for the children's ideas about the subject, and some of their ideas included:

"Infinity is basically forever."

"It's not a number, and it never ends."

"It's technically the biggest number, but it's not a number."

"If it is turned sideways, it is an 8."

So you can see they came in with some rudimentary knowledge about a very complex concept. Children absolutely love to think about "big" things - pondering the enormity of the universe, or wondering life millions of years ago.

Anyway, the two books I found are wonderful - a picture book called Infinity and Me, by Kate Hosford, and a short chapter book called The Cat in Numberland, by Ivar Ekeland. The latter, in particular, is a great choice to take children to a deeper exploration of infinity.
