Today was a big day for my math group. After weeks and weeks of working on our big project for the semester, we put our finishing touches on our "How to Multiply" books. We went from the 2 times tables through the 10 times tables - writing down a story problem, illustrating the solution to the problem, and figuring out (and hiding) the answer. Each child is now the proud owner of a copy of the book, and decorated their own cover for it.
By becoming teachers (and authors), this group has endeavored to help other students "see" what multiplication is. Most children still do not have instant recall of all of their facts (although some are getting pretty close), but they have all proven they have deep understanding of what multiplication means. They also have developed deeper appreciation of memorizing their facts, because drawing 64 of something can be tough! Probably better just to "lock in" 8 x 8.
We've had fun working on this project together, and I hope the children will enjoy this little keepsake as a fond memory of our hard work and play in math class.
