Birthdays at School

Birthday celebrations are usually filled with traditions - a special dinner out, perhaps, or a particular chocolate cake. At school, many families like to send in a treat for their child's birthday to mark the occasion.

We have at least THREE classroom birthdays in September, including one the very first day of school! Since that parent asked about birthday treats and traditions, I thought this might be a good time to give some suggestions.

Food treats are lovely, and the children really appreciate them. Healthy suggestions include all-fruit ice popsicles or fruit kabobs.

Alternatively, some parents like to send in a more lasting treat. One of my favorite ways is the tradition of bringing a favorite book to donate to the classroom. If the birthday child inscribes the book (such as, "To my class on the occasion of my 7th birthday", for instance), that makes it even more special. I read the book to the class, and then it will be placed in a designated spot in our classroom library.

Of course, it is not necessary or required to do anything, but these are just a couple suggestions.
