Curious Epicures Tomorrow, 10/10/10

Tomorrow is our Curious Epicures Feast, from 4 - 7. I hope I see you all there! As you know, all classes have been working on making this a special event. I can't wait to see the castle structure from Elaine's kindergartners, or the music performances by Renata's class of 3rd/4th/5th graders! We grew a Renaissance herb garden, although the herbs were rather too little to be used as we had intended. (We'll keep growing them, though, just to fill the room with greenery and life!)

I went to the Ann Arbor Farmers Market this morning and got lots of different types of herbs - sage, lemon verbena, rosemary, lavender - and made up little bundles. Each 1/2 grader should see me to get their bundle, and then it will be their job to strew the herbs on the floor of our "banquet hall". Strewing herbs were often spread on the floor of earth, wood or stone in order to mask the odors in a room. If you picture a banquet hall filled with knights, guards, family, staff, dogs and other animals, you can see the value of these herbs. Herbs were also strewn on the floor to keep down fleas and vermin. So our young lords and ladies have an important job tomorrow!

Interesting how herbs could be used in ways other than cooking. Great post.
