Best Work - Giving Children Voice in their Portfolio
It has long been thought that even very young children can and should be active contributors to their work portfolios. They take pride in what they do, and can reflect on their own growth. This is a chance for them to remember what they have done, and plan where they want to go in the future. Most importantly, they practice looking at their own work with a critical eye.
Today, after 7 weeks of school, we now have 7 poems we have read and illustrated. Some children saw that they rushed through some of their illustrations, and may not have done their best work. Some illustrations, however, they took their time with, added a lot of detail, and are real moments of pride.
Each child is in the process of selecting a "best work," labeling it as such with their name and date, and adding it to their portfolio. We will do this several times this year, with both the poetry anthologies and the memory books.
Please come in at any time and have your child show you their portfolios! We will also go through these at the second parent-teacher conferences, and they will be yours to keep at the end of the school year.
