Self Portraits Show Personality!
Project time with our first/second grade friends in Tate's class has been very productive so far - both times, we've worked diligently on our self-portraits, finishing today. Most of our "together time" will be focused on project-work, although sometimes we may do something just for fun. Usually, it is both project related and also fun!
Tate showed the children examples of some famous self-portraits. We noticed that while each portrait was different, they all had similarities including colorful backgrounds, colorful details, and facial features and hair. They each were just head and shoulders.
First the children used templates (if they wanted, some chose not to) to trace their heads and shoulders onto their own selected skin tone paper. Cutting these pieces out, they could then glue them on a background paper. After that, adding facial details came next, followed by lots and lots of details. Material, buttons, lace - these made fine clothing. Yarn of different textures supplied perfect hair.
