A Wonderful Week

Tate's and Carpenter's group project time was spent outside as we went on two silent listening walks. With one, we listened to city sounds as we walked down Platt Road - we heard many cars, trucks, lawn care machines, and more. Today, Friday, we went to County Farm Park, where more birdsong and crunching underfoot was heard. We brought some clipboards and sketching paper with us, too, so we could make some quick drawings of what we saw today once we landed at the flower garden area.

In math this week, we have had SO much fun, expanding our knowledge about place value and getting more comfortable and flexible in our thinking about numbers. We've gone up to the 10,000 place in our place value game that we play at the very end of math class - and saying these very high numbers have provided a nice challenge for many. This week, we also welcomed four wonderful math helpers - many, many thanks to Ron, Stacy, Jen, and Griffin.

Science time on Monday allowed us time to finish our Cell-fies - so cute! This great beginning-of-the-year science lesson is also a great introduction to identity. Please check out this sweet display out by the front door, if you have not already done so.

Kalyan and Mira were fantastic special readers, and everyone tried their best on their second "memory page" of the year. This time we wrote about our trip to Sweet Acres Berry Patch. We are over half-way through A Boy Called Bat - I, for one, have grown so attached to Bat I will be sorry to see this book end. We had library time on Thursday with the best librarian in the world, our friend Beck. She is just JOYFUL!

Free time in the room remains the children's favorite time of the week, and I make sure they get some undirected time and space to explore at least a few times a week. It was particularly fun this week with the addition of a couple of kits I purchased at The Scrap Box. The robot making kit inspired some very cool looking little robots, and lots of glittery jewelry was made from a big bag of mixed gems I purchased. We have some very creative children in our midst!

Finally, we are making/have made our felt pouches for our meditation pebbles. These four pebbles represent flower, mountain, still water, and space. We will begin pebble meditation on Monday, if anyone cares to join.
