This information is also found in Walter's weekly update:
In
science this week, children are learning about different ways to conserve one
of most precious natural resources – water. Shan read part of One Well: The Story of Water on Earth.
Then students brainstormed as many ways as possible to save water in their
homes – like having a rain barrel, taking quick showers, and so on. These ideas
will be transferred onto posters next week.
Children
in my math group learned how to play a very popular and engaging probability
game using one die called PIG. This is a perennial favorite, and it can get
pretty intense! All children are secure in their knowledge that there is a one
out of six chance of getting any number each time a die is thrown. This week,
we added another die to the mix and have started collecting data on two dice
sums. Is it more probable to get the sum of 7, say, than the sum of 2? Why or
why not?
Project
time with the other first/second grade class was a hub of activity as we all
learned how to design a seed packet so that people would buy it. What types of
information is useful? Very careful work is being done on these works of
science and art. Children voted on the seed company name, too: S-K Seed Sprout
and Grow.
Kalyan
and Evan did a fantastic job as Special Readers, or so our guest teacher
reported back to me (and I was thrilled to hear). Children also illustrated the
poem of the week, and we are very close to being finished with Mrs. Piggle Wiggle’s Birthday Party.
Mother’s
Day took up some of our time together as we read stories, made cards, and did
some crafts for some special people in our lives. These children sure love
their mamas. Enjoy your special day!
