Winter Self Portraits

We made new self portraits for our room on Monday! Our fall-inspired ones definitely needed to be sent home as the chilly temperatures and leafless trees attest to the fact we are in the depths of a mid-west winter. Now we just need snow to tramp around in! These self portraits add lots of lovely color to our room, in case the sky is gray (as January-March tends to be in Michigan). We did these with pencils, crayons, and soft pastels - plus construction paper for our winter clothing (hats or scarfs). I loved the way they turned out and will have a hard time giving them up in a couple of months.

Getting the children ready for recess this time of year always reminds me of this sweet poem by Karla Kuskin, called Winter Clothes:

Under my hood I have a hat
And under that
My hair is flat.
Under my coat
My sweater's blue.
My sweater's red.
I'm wearing two.
My muffler muffles to my chin
And round my neck
And then tucks in.
My gloves were knitted
By my aunts.
I've mittens too
And pants
And pants
And boots
And shoes
With socks inside.
The boots are rubber, red and wide.
And when I walk
I must not fall
Because I can't get up at all.
