This Week in Review - December 17 - 21

Our final week before break was a fun and busy one. Our December theme of sharing family and cultural traditions continued on Monday with learning how to make gorgeous window stars. Mira’s mom came to teach us this Waldorf craft using special shiny paper – they are so easy to do, but the end result is lovely. The children really enjoyed making them.

Ian was our special reader this week, and he read one of our favorites – an Elephant and Piggie story! Other routines included poetry and lots of quiet/buddy reading. Since we finished our chapter book last week, we’ve been reading all sorts of longer picture books this week. We will start a new chapter book when everyone returns from break. This week’s favorites included The Minpins, by Roald Dahl and April’s Kittens by Clare Turlay Newberry.

We had math just a few times this week, due to special activities. But we did get to practice our magic trick and even put on our show on Wednesday! Math books were corrected and sent home on Thursday, so children can work on them just a bit over break.

We loved seeing The Wizard of Oz on Tuesday morning! The 5th and 6th graders did a fantastic job. We’ve seen bits and pieces of this play as we eat our morning snack over the past few weeks, so it was great to see it all come together at last. And it was lovely for me to see so many of my former students become such confident and talented performers!

On Friday morning, first and second graders from both classes were the presenters at the all-school morning meeting. Our presentation was the culmination of our work on the honeybee project we’ve been doing in science lab. Children showed their commercials they made, their clay bee models, as well as the hive they worked together on. While only six of our classmates were available on Friday due to early vacation plans, they “held down the fort,” and did an excellent job.

Friday was also pajama day and cookie cottage day – a highly anticipated day for sure. We did a preliminary count of our pajamas last week for the Scholastic drive, and we had 30 pairs. We are now up to 33 pairs. This is wonderful news! I will be dropping these pajamas off to Ann Arbor Safe House over the break.

Children had a great time decorating their cookie cottages. We used a lot of frosting and all sorts of coloring candy to make these pretty centerpieces. I hope they bring a little joy to your table this winter break!
