Sharing Traditions - An Important December Theme

We make sure each December to carve out some classroom time to invite children and parents to share their traditions, both cultural and family. It is important for children to see that while we may not all share the same beliefs or customs, there are ties that bind us together. Most notably, holidays this time of year celebrate light in darkness, show gratitude for food, family, and life, and pause for reflection.

Here are just two pictures from yesterday (Monday) that reflect this commonality of light in darkness - the Hanukkah menorah, a St. Martin's lantern, and the Advent wreath candles. Many, many thanks to Jacob's and Ian's moms for coming in to share their traditions with us (which also include games, shoes, and songs!)
