What's in YOUR pellet? A Science Activity about Owls and the Food Chain

The students have been very interested in owls, especially since our successful "bake sale for the birdies" and subsequent sponsorship of the Northern Saw Whet Owl at LSNC. Today, we got to read more about owls and their spot on the food chain, and learned what makes them the amazing predators they are.

Then each child got their own owl pellet to dissect. It's wonderful to learn things from books, but how much more meaningful and fun to be real scientists? We used picks and magnifying glasses, along with a detailed bone-sorting guide, to try to identify what owls eat. This is hands-on learning at its best!
