Environmental Super Hero Projects for 2011-2012 School Year
Last year was the first year my class did special monthly projects with an environmental focus. The children loved it so much, and got so much out of it, that I thought we would do this again this year. As you know, Summers-Knoll prides itself on being a Michigan Green School and we already do much to maintain this status - but there is so much more we could be doing!
In the classroom, we will continue to do everyday things, like using both sides of the paper, putting used paper and plastic in the recycle bins, and keeping our playground free of litter, but we will also be environmental superheroes by doing these special projects.
Here are some ideas that I’ve come up with so far. Some are popular repeats from last year, some are new:
September – start our new vermicomposting station
October – tour at MRF (Materials Recovery Facility)
November – take all the recycling out for whole school
December – bake sale for birds - proceeds will be used to sponsor a raptor
January – make snow ice cream and vegan cookies
February – homemade valentines
March – make own "green" cleaning solutions for spring cleaning
April – earth day special event/bird house gourds
May – harvest worm poo and plant seeds

Now I have come to expect projects just like the ones you mentioned. It will be another super year for SK.
love it!
Have you thought about having the kids sell the cleaning supplies with recipe tags? Might be a nice way to get us parents on board, plus make some $$!
